Lichgates was a fascinating read. I was sucked into this alternate world and felt as if I was actually living with the characters. S.M. Boyce did an amazing job bringing the characters to life, as well as creating a brilliant story. I was so absorbed in what was happening I had to read it in one night. And then I had to immediately purchase the other books in the series because I had to know what happened! I definitely recommend this book, as well as the other books in the series. You won't be disappointed.Product details

Lichgates Book One of the Grimoire Saga (Audible Audio Edition) SM Boyce Kara Kovacich Stewart S M Boyce Books Reviews
Kara has lost her mom and she blames herself. But her dad is not much better, so when she and her dad take a trip to the mountains it looks to be a strained time between the two. One morning Kara is up early and goes hiking only to find a weird gazebo thing, than somehow falls into a cool library with no doors. All she wants is to go home, but this is when she finds out she is trapped as a new Vagabond by the Grimoire, in a odd land called Ourea, and they have very different plans for her, none of which is allowing her to go home.
I had the audiobook version narrated by Kara Kovacich Stewart and it was awesome. I don't always bring up my dyslexia, but sometime I stay away from reading these books because the made up names for things make the book really hard to read but when I can get them in audio form I really enjoy them a lot, and when you have someone like Kara Kovacich Stewart narrate the book then you feel really special as she makes it an enchanting experience, I can't wait to listen to the next one and find out what happens.
Lichgates Book One in the Grimoire Saga by S.M. Boyce is a richly imagined fantasy which introduces readers to the strange and dangerous world of Ourea. The characters are nuanced and complex and Boyce isn't afraid to drive them up a tree and throw rocks, or knives for that matter, at them in order to raise the tension level. Her imagery, though occasionally odd, is vivid and pulls the reader deeper into the story. Kara as issues and troubles most can relate to guilt over the death of a loved one, the challenge of knowing which is the right decision in a world of difficult choices. Braeden, with his hidden past and conflicting loyalties is somehow still admirable and sympathetic. The double themes of choices and trust are universal and beautifully explored.
The only drawback in this book is that Boyce occasionally mixes her images in a way that is counterintuitive. Each time she assigned an auditory sensation to a visual image, it made me pause and go, "huh?" a little bit. Still it wasn't nearly enough to stop me reading the rest of the book, which I enjoyed immensely. I hope you will too.
I enjoyed Lichgates in that we are taken into another world full of magic and intrigue, but it took me awhile to really get into it at first. However, as the story unfolded, I grew to enjoy it more, and I was then hooked!
This is the story of Kara; she is hiking and stumbles through a lichgate, taking her into a totally different world. She is thrust into a situation where she learns she has become a key to the future of this realm! It's a heavy burden for a young woman struggling to deal with grief and tragedy... She is always told never to trust anyone when she yearns for a friend to help her on this journey.
S. M. Boyce has really richly created a new world with different "peoples" for each kingdom as well as a variety of magical creatures! The description is vivid enough to picture them for yourself! Her characters are slowly revealed as Kara herself learns the truth about them. There are different motivations to all who help Kara, and she is not afraid to trust her own instincts even against her mentor the first Vagabond. Kara is realistic in that she has no pretensions of being a hero - she knows that she is flawed, even broken - yet, she does her best to accept the challenges presented. You find yourself wishing she could really find just one true friend besides tiny Flick!
As a fantasy story, I like the fact that the world is drawn out and explained as Kara needs the information not only to accomplish her mission but also to survive. Too, the book is a clean story with it's romance or should I say hints of it. What is especially nice is that Kara is not afraid to admit she doesn't know and she will accept help. She also learns and grows with the story so that you are hoping indeed that she will succeed in her quest! (I admit to hovering between 4 and 5 stars simply because it took awhile to grow on me at first but then everything began to come together and move faster, and her journeys were NOT easy...!)
I w recommend this book for anyone wanting to read a story with a good female lead learning about her own strengths as the story folds. It is a nice escape into another world, and I am looking forward to reading more in this series soon as I am curious as to the rest of the saga!
